Sidebars and widgets – get users’ attention

The approach to the Internet user must be properly planned if you want to encourage him to use additional features or point him to links to topics he is currently interested in.

Intrusive ads or windows are not a good solution, as the user is already bored with them or even impatient with their constant appearance. A good solution is sidebars – a way that does not impose any specific decision on the user, allowing him to decide for himself.

The windows that slide out when a page is opened are sidebars. They are an interesting way to interest the customer in a topic similar to the one currently viewed or a reference to other media, but at the same time they do not impose themselves too much on the customer, giving him space to decide – whether he wants to click on them or not. With them, you can get user data, engage them on social media, get them to click on similar products, etc. The possibilities are many, and the biggest advantage of such windows is that they are not aggressive, and the Internet user uses them when he wants.

Sidebar, to be useful, must be well designed and prepared. It happens that sidebars are carelessly processed, and there is so much unnecessary information on them that the user does not want to use them and does not even pay special attention to them. First of all, the content placed on it must be interesting and useful. They need to be well designed in order to make good use of the space you have – the wide screens that are used today have this space as if more, so it is worth making good use of it, the space must not be wasted, because then you can lose a lot.

Sidebars and widgets - get users' attention

A specific type of sidebars are those designed in WordPress. Here it is good to design different widgets on the home page and others in the tabs. It’s a good idea to use contextual placement, but don’t come up with new solutions for each sub-page.The customary sidebar in WordPress is to be placed on the left, or right. In fact, this is not required – you can deploy them where it is more convenient.

For those who do not design sidebars professionally, it is worth recommending two plugins that will help you get good quality. These are WooSidebars and Custom sidebars. The former is very convenient to use, as it does not require making changes to the template code. Besides, with it you can create a selected number of sidebars. Another type of plugin is Widget or Sidebar Shortcode. With it, you can even place an entire sidebar wherever you want, using a shortcode.

At the very beginning it is necessary to create a file in the root directory – sidebar.php. After loading such a file on the browser, you will then be able to see the Sidebar Panel – this is the place where you can put any subtitles, html codes, but widgets are preferred. To add new widgets in the WordPress area, you need to register it in the functions.php file, and then add the area anywhere in the theme file. The sidebar will have the following parameters place name, place ID, description, ccs class, which is responsible for the appearance of the place, widget-specific code – it is placed before the widget, code after the widget, and two codes one before the title and the other after the widget title. Next, the active sidebar needs to be placed in the appropriate place. Finally, the finished widget needs to be placed in the admin cockpit
